Welcome! Here at First Baptist, our children’s ministry strives to provide a loving, supportive, and enriching experience for children, birth through fifth grade. As well as a supportive and loving community for parents.
Availability- The nursery is staffed and available for you to use on Sunday mornings during the 8:30 and 11 o’clock services, as well as during Sunday school, which starts at 9:45 am. In addition to Sundays, the nursery is also available on Wednesday evenings from 6:15-7:30 pm, and during special services. “Childcare provided”, will be advertised for special services.
Paid nursery workers– We are fortunate to have hired nursery workers here at First Baptist. One advantage is that children see the same familiar faces each week, and are able to feel comfortable being left by parents, as they attend their own programs. The nursery workers are interviewed by a committee of people involved in the children’s ministry, a background check is completed, and evaluations are completed annually. During the 11 o’clock service, we have a rotating church volunteer join the nursery workers as well.
What will my child be doing? – We focus on the needs of the child. Some need time to acclimate to the room by walking around and touching everything, others need a cuddle, while some just need the distraction of a good snack. We feel that by meeting the individual needs of your child, we’re teaching them that church is a safe place that cares about them. The nursery and classroom next door are both equipped with toys, books, puzzles, arts and crafts, music, and snacks. We have a pager system so that parents can be easily reached, should a problem arise. Parents are given a numbered pager, which will light up and buzz if you are needed. We go off of the directions and preferences of the parent, you let us know how best to take care of your child.
Bible friends are held during the 11 o’clock service and is intended for older fours through first grade. Bible friends begin after the children’s story portion of the worship service and end once the service is over. This class is taught by volunteers, we currently use a curriculum made by Cokesbury, called Deep Blue. During Bible friend’s children participate in a bible story and craft. As well as snack time and free play.
We have allowed for children with special needs or younger siblings to attend Bible friends past the first grade. However, we encourage you to help your children learn about and participate in the worship service. Our church welcomes children into the sanctuary and even to lead worship by reading the Call to Worship or performing music etc.
Little Me Sunday School– A parent and child Sunday school class for birth through two years. We use a curriculum called Frolic. There is a bible story each week, and music. There are storybooks that parents can read to their children and time for the children to play with each other.
Preschool– Our Preschool Sunday school currently uses an incredible interactive curriculum from Group, called Hands on Curriculum. This curriculum has visual aids, including vibrant bible stories, maps, and pictures, a weekly skit with a puppet and weekly arts and crafts projects. A snack is provided during Sunday school.
School Age– School age Sunday school is for children in kindergarten through fifth grade. The children begin in one large group where we catch up with each other and have a time for prayer requests. We celebrate the birthdays of the month on the first Sunday, with donuts! Once the opening time is completed children move to their individual classes.
Kindergarten and First graders are together, using a curriculum by Sparkhouse called, Spark!
Second and third graders are together, using a curriculum by Sparkhouse called, Holy Moly!
Fourth and fifth graders are together, using curriculum by Sparkhouse called, Holy Moly!
Wednesday Evening Activities
Preschool– Lead by our paid nursery workers, children enjoy a bible story, crafts, and free play!
School Agers– On Wednesday evenings, the school agers have ample time to discuss what’s on their mind, and what’s happening in their lives. The bible study time is missions focused and throughout the year there are opportunities for service projects. A few times a year the schoolagers attend the adult bible study, as part of “together night”. Once in a while, we have a game night, and every year we end with an ice cream party!
